Music is investigated based on the theoretical, philosophical, and aesthetic ideas, which have informed it over the centuries.
Expected learning outcomes
To understand that music is a complex phenomenon, with a focus on its intellectual premises rather than on its acoustic nature, studying its relationship to the period and context in which music is produced and consumed.

The origins of harmony: mythology and philosophy
The course offers a review of ancient cosmologies and mythologies of music, from Pythagoras to Kepler, and of the ways in which these ideas survive today.

Lecture. Part of the course will be devoted to research methods preparatory to the end-of-semester presentation that substitutes the exam.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The candidate will present a topic to the class (on a date to be determined) as a multimedia paper, i.e. as a short podcast/video. The working methods will be shown and developed during the course.
'Non frequentanti': The exam consists of a written work on a topic established in advance with the professor. To take the exam as 'non frequentanti', it is necessary to have attended the STRiM 'laboratorio'.
