Learning objectives
The course is offered for beginners and it aims to provide students with an A2-level.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the lessons, students must be able to:
- Read selectively short written texts related to the German reality (web sites of institutions and universities, descriptions of cities and Länder etc.);
- Produce short written texts of different textual genres. Particular attention will be given to the most common forms of communication (such as emails and discussion forums);
- Understand the main ideas of short oral and audio-visual texts (news, videos of presentation, tutorials etc.);
- Report about present and past events of significance for the students (academic world, student activities etc.), answer to simple questions and ask questions

Course syllabus
The following topics will be covered during the course:
- Main rules of pronunciation;
- Lexicon of level A1 and A2.
- Determinative and indeterminative articles (nominative, accusative, dative and genitive case);
- Gender of nouns;
- Declination of adjectives;
- Prepositions governing the accusative and dative;
- Auxiliary, modal and separable verbs (indicative present, Perfekt and Präteritum);
- Regular and irregular verbs (indicative present, imperative, Perfekt and Präteritum);
- Verbs with prepositions;
- Structure of the main clauses.
- Structure of the secondary clauses (verb in last position), in particular causal (weil, da), temporal (als, wenn) and final (damit, um zu) sentences.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The actual achievement of the expected learning outcomes will be ascertained through a written and an oral examination:
Written examination: Students will have to carry out exercises in grammar and vocabulary filling, reformulation and multiple-choice) according to the model of those proposed during the lessons (30 minutes). The use of mono- and/or bilingual dictionaries is not permitted.
The written exam is computerized.
Oral examination: includes short open questions on the topics covered during the course.
Students who have already studied German for at least three years will be required to briefly discuss the content and issues addressed in five previously selected and independently studied topical texts from the "Topthemen" section of the Deutsche Welle website: https://www.dw.com/de/deutsch-lernen/top-thema/s-8031
The texts must have been published in the academic year in which the exam is taken.
