Learning objectives
The course is meant to provide a solid ground in the basic concepts and facts of chemistry, particularly those needed for a successful understanding of other subjects for which general chemistry is a prerequisite. Topics covered within the course will include: structure of atoms and molecules, chemical bond, chemical reactions, chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry, thermodynamic and kinetic outlines. Methods to solve stoichiometry problema will be treated. Primary goal of the course is to provide students with tools to discuss on the chemical and physical changes of matter.
Expected learning outcomes
The expected learning outcomes for the students will be the achievement of the ability to recognize chemical compounds and explain their reactivity and physical properties based on their structure, correctly write and identify chemical reactions, Students are expected to understand and solve stoichiometry problems. Finally students are expected to discuss topics coverd within the course with a proper scientific language.

Structure of matter: Atomic structure. Atomic and molecular weights. Isotopes. Radioactivity. Mass defect.
Quantitative chemical relationships: Balancing redox reactions. Stoichiometric calculus.
The chemical equilibrium. Le Chatelier's principle. Equilibrium constants.Acid-Base reaction: Acids and bases (Arrhenius, Broensted, Lewis theories). pH. Acid-base titrations.
Atomic structure: Bohr's atomic model. De Broglie equation. Heisenberg's principle. On Schrödinger equation. Hydrogen atom. Many-electron atoms. The "aufbau" principle and the periodic table. The Chemical bond: Ionic bonds. VSEPR Theory. The Covalent bond. The Hydrogen bond and the weak interactions. Bonding in coordination compound. Lattice energy and hydration energy. Ionic, molecular and van der Waals crystals.
Gases: Gas laws and the equation of state for ideal and real gases. Elements of the kinetic theory of gases.
Solubility.
Thermodynamics: The first, the second and the third law of thermodynamics. Thermodynamic functions and chemical equilibrium.
Elettrochemistry: Cell potentials. Nernst's law. Electrolysis.
Chemical kinetics: Rates of chemical reactions, reaction order and the kinetic equation. Arrhenius's law. Catalysts.
Prerequisites for admission
Knowledge of the basic math operations, including I and II grade equations, conversion between measurements units and operations with logarithms.
The primary goal of the course is to provide a solid foundation in the basics concepts and facts of chemistry, particularly those needed for a successful understanding of other subjects for which chemistry is a prerequisite. The general chemistry course must also give the student an appreciation of the importance of chemistry to society in general and, in particular, to daily life.
Teaching methods
The teacher uses slides (PowerPoint) including both concepts and formulas of all the topics of the course program. Many exercises are also proposed to the students in order to test their understanding of the chemical concepts. Just before the "in itinere" test, a simulation
of the exam is carried out.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of a written test (5 stoichiometry exercises on topics chosen from those addressed during the course, to be carried out in 2 hours) and an oral test about the entire program for the definition of the final grade. Students may alternatively choose to take 3 ongoing written tests (4 stoichiometry exercises and 1 theory question that will be carried out in 2 hours) and/or an oral test during the course. The ongoing tests will focus on the 3 parts of the program into which the course is divided. Admission to the oral test is, in any case, subjected to pass the written test with a minimum grade of 18/30; in the event that the student decides to do the ongoing tests, the evaluation will be given by the average of the marks obtained in the three written tests. Only in the case of ongoing tests, the student should decide to increase the final grade with the oral test.

Power point slides will be used to illustrate the topics covered. Stoichiometry exercises will performed and further exercises will be proposed by the Exam Manager online platform.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will be performed by both a written and an oral test. The written test will contain 5 stoichiometry exercises and will last 2 hours; the oral exam will be performed only if the score obtained at written test is >=18.
Students may also partecipate to in itinere exams (3 test planned). If the average score of the in itinere tests is > or = 18, students will have access to the oral test.
