Learning objectives
The Course is aimed at providing background information regarding equine exercise physiology, training techniques and performance evaluation in different equestrian disciplines, which will be achieved by means of room lectures, seminars and practical field training.
Expected learning outcomes
1) Knowledge and understanding: the student will have to demonstrate a good knowledge of equine exercise phisiology, training techniques and performance evaluation in different equestrian disciplines.
2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student will have to be able to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the practice of sport horses.
3) Autonomy of judgement: the student will have to learn critically and actively both the information provided by the professor and those coming from the recommended texts and teaching materials.
4) Communication skills: the student will be able to explain the concepts acquired during the lessons and training with appropriate and updated terminology

Lectures

Exercise physiology and performance:
- Energy and metabolism (1 hour)
- Termoregulation (1 hour)
- Respiratory system: morph-functional adaptation to exercise (1 hour)
- Cardiovascular system: morph-functional adaptation to exercise (1 hour)
- Muscles: morph-functional adaptation to exercise (1 hour)
- Tendons, ligaments, bones and chartilage: morph-functional adaptation to exercise (1 hour)

Biomechanics:
-Conformation (1 hour)
-Biomechanics of locomotion (1 hour)

Training techniques and functional and metabolic evaluation:
- Training regimens (2 hours)
- Training thoroughbred horses (1 hour)
- Training endurance horses (1 hour)
- Training showjumping, dressage and event horses (1 hour)
- Evaluation of athletic potential (1 hour)
- Dynamic tests (2 hours)

Practical training

High speed treadmill evaluation of racehorses (6 hours)
On site evaluation of sport horses (6 hours)
Guided tours to training centres (4 hours)
Prerequisites for admission
Basics of anatomy and physiology, acquired during the previous years
Teaching methods
The program will consist of both room lectures (16 hours) and on-site practical training (16 ore) at different facilities for training of Dressage, Endurance, Thoroughbred, Standardbred and Event horses and at the Equine Medicine Unit of the Teaching Veterinary Hospital in Lodi

Assessment methods and Criteria
Oral test, regarding in depth evaluation of the different subjects faced during the room lectures and on-site training, by means of slides presentation for groups of 3/5 students, in order to establish the acquired competences during the Course and the ability to work in group.
