Learning objectives
The educational objectives of teaching are:
1) to provide a framework of the musculoskeletal diseases most significant from an epidemiological
point of view
2) to teach to recognize the most frequent orthopaedic clinical pictures that come to the attention of
the General Practitioner, through an adequate medical history and a correct execution of segmental
physical examination
3) to lead the student to a rational choice of instrumental and laboratory exams, based on the principles
of sensitivity and specificity, but also with an assessment of the best cost/benefit ratio
4) to provide the necessary elements to assist the specialist in managing the patient candidate to
undergo orthopedic surgery
5) to provide the necessary elements to assist the specialist in the management of the operated patient,
once at home
6) to provide the concepts of disability and the general notions of rehabilitation treatment and
functional recovery

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student should have a good knowledge of the main orthopaedic pathologies,
and be able to interpret, explain and exemplify the diagnosis and therapeutic indications to the patient.
The student will be provided with the necessary means to carry out a correct differential diagnosis,
performing a comprehensive and independent physical examination and making use of the first and
second level biochemical and radiological examinations with sufficient skill.
Furthermore, he must be able to recognize the different levels of severity of an osteoarticular injury,
identifying the related therapeutic objectives and the means to pursue them, with particular attention
to a correct definition of the urgency criterion.
Finally, the student must be able to recognize the main functional musculoskeletal disabilities and
support the patient along his rehabilitation process.

Prerequisites for admission
Students must have adequate knowledge of the anatomy of the musculoskeletal and vascular system as wells as of biomechanics and pathophysiology of the musculoskeletal apparatus.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of:- oral exam: it is carried out on the whole program, the ability to expose the key concepts of orthopedic injuries is assessed.Passing the test will determine a mark expressed in thirtieths. No intermediate tests are foreseen.

Course syllabus
1) GENERALITY- Elements of anatomical-radiological morphology, essential for the study of skeletal pathologies.- The fundamental principles of skeletal ossification, skeletal growth and bone turnover, and their histomorphological and biochemical features with reference to the main pathologies of skeletal growth and aging of the skeleton and joints respectively.2) TRAUMATOLOGY- The main traumatic injuries of the locomotor apparatus: contusion, capsulolegamentous lesion, dislocation, fracture.- Classification of fractures, reparative mechanisms of fractures of cortical and spongy bone tissue. - Bone callus, consolidation delays and pseudoarthrosis- The femoral neck fractures.- Joint fractures (with particular reference to the knee, wrist, ankle)- Short bone fractures (with particular reference to vertebral, calcaneal, carpal scaphoid fractures) - Chondroepiphyseal detachments in the child.- Meniscal and ligament fractures of the knee3) ORTOPEDICS- Congenital pathologies of the locomotor system with particular reference to evolutionary dysplasia of the hip and club-foot- Skeletal growth disorders with particular reference to osteochondrosis, scoliosis, M. of Perthes, flat foot, coxa vara and valga- Degenerative and involutive pathology of joints and skeleton with particular reference to coxarthrosis and gonarthrosis- Osteoporotic disease, disc disease, hemophilic arthromiopathy- Dysplastic and neoplastic pathology of the skeleton, with particular reference to Paget's M., amartomes, metastatic tumors.- Main conditions of the hand, with particular reference to carpal tunnel syndrome, snap finger, de Quervain's and Dupuytren's disease.
Teaching methods
The teaching methods used to deliver the teaching are multiple and synergistic. Classical theoretical frontal lectures are combined with interactive discussions of clinical cases with case description imaging support, practical demonstrations and exercises concerning orthopaedic objective examination maneuvers, presentation of videos and images concerning the surgical techniques described during the lectures. In addition, teaching includes the participation of students in the professionalizing activities of the ward, operating room and outpatient departments
