Third Mission organization and governance

Among the objectives of the University Strategic Plan, of Departmental Three-Year Plans, and at the heart of the Third Mission, are enhancing our research products and know-how, developing innovation initiatives, promoting cultural, sporting and artistic activities.

The Deputy Rectors contribute to the governance of Third Mission activities within their respective mandates: research and innovation, Third Mission, impact and cultural activities. The network of departmental delegates for the Third Mission cooperates with the Deputy Rectors, ensuring coordination between University and departmental activities, and overseeing monitoring and impact assessment processes.

Documents and guidelines

The monitoring process was developed with the support of the Innovation and Knowledge Enhancement Division which, among others, assists University governing bodies and supports faculty members at all stages and in all organizational and administrative aspects. Moreover, Third Mission activities are supported by the UNIMI Foundation, within the framework of innovation and knowledge transfer programmes.

The monitoring process currently unfolds on several levels based on guidelines and surveys inspired by the  Guidelines for Third mission and Social Impact Reporting (2015-2017) issued by ANVUR in November 2018.  Third Mission activities at the University and its 33 departments were monitored for the 2015-19 period.

Furthermore, in line with the 2020-22 departmental planning cycle, a further periodic monitoring system of Third Mission activities and their impact was launched, which is integrated with the Strategic Plan and the Departmental Three-year Plans.

The expertise of our academic community is given visibility through the Expertise & Skills platform. With a view to the next University Research Assessment (VQR), we are developing case studies on the economic, cultural and social impact of our activities.

For Third Mission activities, the Research Quality Assessment (VQR) call requires the University of Milan to submit 17 case studies through its 33 Departments.

For this purpose, DIVCO requested two case studies from each Department, to be drawn up according to the VQR template.

All the proposed case studies, whether or not selected, will have visibility through different communication channels.
